Hello!
I’m Kevin Simmons. I help people connect with their audiences. Connection means you’re having a conversation, not a performance.
My Mission
I was born and raised in the SFBay Area, the third of four children. Born talking, pretty much, which meant I’ve had to really work hard on listening.
In college, a friend said I should try out for a play, which was all it took: I was an actor, director, singer, and opera singer for twenty-five years. I also worked for many years as an editor and proofer for Stanford University, Berkeley, and UCLA presses. Then, when my two children were small, I started twenty years of teaching drama, choir, and humanities in Waldorf high schools.
I’m fascinated by the interplay between writer and reader, actor and audience, singer and listener…
- What’s really going on there, in text and subtext, connotation and denotation, in what’s said and unsaid?
- What are the bodies saying?
- Why do people assume and use their vocal identities?
- How can voices and bodies be educated to return to original vitalities?
- How can words be chosen and arranged for maximum connection and impact?
- How does all of this land with audiences?
- Who are these audiences?
- How to face, feed, play with, move, and be moved by them?
I love helping people approach thresholds and portals and step over and through them. Equipping them for these journeys. Helping people transform.
Our work together is a mix of nuts-and-bolts and the metaphysical. It’s custom: we will find and speak a common language that works for you. No two needs are exactly alike, though most folks need help excavating and writing their story (so, script work). Some need help with vocal or speech issues. Many need help with their gestural life (body), though few choose to work on it. (I wish more would. Audiences decide about you in just a few seconds of reading your body. Also, it’s really fun to use your body to communicate!)
My mission here is to help connect you with your audience. Any audience, any occasion.
You want that. They want that. And I want that.
So let’s get started!
